At 18 months of age, she was adopted by an Irish Family, the McGuire's, living outside Boston, MA. Growing up, Sara was one of three ethnically diverse children until high school. When she entered her freshman year at university, she majored in psychology but soon realized it wasn't her passion. With a desire for structure and an interest in the criminal justice field, she chose to enroll at Norwich University.

After majoring in Criminal Justice at Norwich University, Sara began a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, initially serving as a Military Intelligence officer before transitioning to a role as a Military Police Officer. During her service, she completed two combat tours in Iraq, where she trained Iraqi police forces and managed security operations. Following her military career, she moved to the private sector, working at Alion Science and Technology, SAIC, Wounded Warrior Project, Alaska Airlines, Boeing, and SAP. In her final role in the private sector, she was the Global Lead for Workplace Violence Prevention, Active Assailant Awareness, Threat Management, and Senior Investigator at a Fortune 100 company. In this role, she developed and implemented comprehensive programs in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

Success stories and impact

Workplace violence is an important issue facing all types of organizations given the increasingly diverse threat environment today. CEO Sara Margalus visited my undergraduate class in criminal justice administration and provided an excellent overview of the nature and types of workplace violence, potential mitigation approaches, and a review of some popular cases that resonated with students, prompted discussion and deeper thinking.

Her interactions with the class indicated a deep understanding of the issue and how organizations and individuals might consider ways to both detect and think about how to respond to this increasing and potentially deadly threat. I recommend that organizations of all types consider planning and training in this area, and Sara Margalus and Soterian Consulting are the right partners for that effort.
